Antoinette Nausikaa and her work
My work is about the relation of my body and my life to my direct surroundings, the things around me or the situations I experience. By observing and focusing on seemingly insignificant events around me, I want to define relationships between objects, people and myself in a certain environment. My deepest interest goes out to examining my personal connection to the environment around me. How am I related, how do I connect?
This extends to my Wirecreatures (these are eight meters high human figures) or my stick figures (ink drawings of human figures) expressing for instance emotions. I also use photography and video. I combine the different media in installations, videos or books.
After graduating at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam 2004, I worked as an assistent for the photographer Rineke Dijkstra for 4 years. In 2009 and 2010 I followed a two year residency at Rijksakademie voor beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam.
I have a great interest in the religious aspects of live especially in Eastern religion and Zen. The drawings of the Japanese Zen monk Sengai Gibbon (1750-1837) are a source of inspiration to me.
Art Collections from The Dutch Bank (DNB), LUMC Leiden and the W.A Huis Utrecht have included my work. In 2008 I won won the Dutch ’Bouw-in-Beeld Photography Award’ with a book about the boulevard of Vlissingen, my place of Birth.
I’ve exhibited with my photographs, films and installations at places such as The Rijksakademie Amsterdam NL, Photography Museum Huis Marseille Amsterdam NL, Kunstraum Dusseldorf D, Studio Carlos Caraicoa Madrid ES, Kunst Vereniging Drawing Center Diepenheim NL, Kunstschloss Ringenberg D, Meetfactory Prague.
